The Men's section at Harrogate Hockey Club is currently thriving and offers members the chance to play at a range of standards. We have five senior sides representing the club, from the 1st team who will play the 2013/14 season in North Division One to the 5th team who are based in Division 6 (North) of the Yorkshire Hockey League. A Badgers side is also being introduced this year to provide a stepping stone for our talented youngsters.
1st & 2nd Team
The Men's section is fortunate to train and play at one of the best hockey facilities in the North of England. The fast and bouncy pitch enables the club to put into practice its philosophy of playing an attractive and attacking style of hockey, while also keeping up its high standards of sportsmanship.
Luke Lambert takes over as 1st team captain from Peter Shipston this year, after the side won North Division Two (East) in 2012/13. The recent success of the side has seen it recruit some of the local area's most talented players, as it attempts to re-establish itself as one of Yorkshire's highest ranked clubs.
Ed Marsden takes the captain's armband from Joe Lyon in the 2nd team, with the side hopeful of promotion from Yorkshire Division One. The team will be aided by good recruitment in the first team, while also providing opportunities and an excellent stepping stone for those wishing to play at the highest level.
The 1st and 2nd teams train together on a Tuesday night at 7.30pm until 9.30pm.
3rd, 4th & 5th Teams
Elsewhere, Fraser Mitchell captains the 3rd team in 2013/14, while Mark Rogers takes over as skipper of the 4th team. Competition between these two sides is fierce, mainly owing to the fact that they both play in Yorkshire Division Four (North).
Richard Blunden again looks after the 5th team, while Gary Nash will lead the Badgers in their first season.
Training for the 3rd, 4th and 5th team takes place on a Wednesday night at 7pm.
The Badgers team is new in 2013/14 and provides an ideal stepping stone for the promising juniors in the club to make their way in adult hockey. The side will play in the North Division of the Yorkshire Hockey Development League, with Gary Nash sharing his experience and knowledge as captain, and Martin Young as manager.
The side will be helped out during the season by a number of senior players at the club who can help play a role in developing Harrogate Hockey Club's stars of the future.
The Men's section also runs a Veterans team, which has proved to be very successful – and well-supported – in recent years. The highlight of their year is the Crawfurd Porter Tournament which is held at the end of the season.
