Ladies Third XI Hockey

The 3rd team is a blend of youth and experience and currently play in Yorkshire Division 2.

Despite good availability and attendance at training, the 3rd X1 underperformed last season and were disappointed to finish 9th in Div 2. At an individual level, Junior improvement and progression was good. As a team, the 3rd's played their best hockey against the better teams in the league demonstrating the potential for better results this year. Critically, consistency, the key to league success, remained elusive.

This season the team will be jointly captained by Anne and Blayney. Both are looking forward to the challenge of adapting to the new rules which should speed up the game so fitness will be crucial !

The teams who are quickest to adapt are likely to find themselves fighting it out for promotion. So we'll be focusing on training hard, a more flexible selection policy and a more structured approach on match day, to try and meet our goal of mounting a strong challenge for promotion.

The 3's aim to enjoy playing hockey and have lots of fun............but winning is much more fun than losing ! Looking forward to lots of league points (and fines !) in 2009/10.

    Latest Match Report

21st March 2010 Doncaster 3 2-2 Harrogate 3

Thankfully the weather was much nicer in Doncaster than it had been the previous day in Harrogate! The sunny day brought out some of our best hockey of the year. In October we were outclassed by Doncaster which was in part due to losing captain Blayney to a mouth injury early on. Today we passed well and were rewarded when a sweeping passing move resulted in goal from the top of the D by Vicky Darcy.

Doncaster then started to find their game and made some good attacks only for keeper Mini Cooper to make some good saves. After a series of short corners a straight strike resulted in an equaliser for Doncaster.

In the 2nd half we carried on playing well and won a series of short corners. On the 3rd attempt we scored when Ali Metcalfe pounced on the rebound to beat the keeper with a lifted shot. Doncaster knew they needed to win to still keep alive any hopes of promotion and continued to push forward. Sadly for us a short corner to Doncaster resulted in a nasty hand injury to Blayney which required stiches and has ended her season. Fortunately we did have a sub so were able to reshuffle the defence.

Doncaster finished the game the stronger and did gain an equaliser shortly before the end of the game but we held out to ensure a well earned draw.

Goals: Vicky Darcy and Ali Metcalfe MOM - Emily Dunne

20th March 2010 Harrogate 3 1-1  Wakefield Wanderers

It was certainly a wet and miserable day in Harrogate. Thankfully our hockey wasn't as bad as the weather. Some good passing saw us take an early lead through top scorer Claire Turner.

Wakefield W had a much better second half and caused the defence a number of problems with Phil Dunn making a number of vital interceptions to prevent their forwards getting through on goal. They had numberous short corners awarded to them and eventually they managed to convert one to level the game.

Having beaten them earlier in the season it was a little disappointing to only draw but having lost so comfortably in the last couple of weeks it was good to get a point!

Previous Results

13th March 2010 York Uni 12-2 Harrogate 3

The students gave the adults a lesson in how to play hockey! In future I suggest that we don't play on this weekend as it seems to result in the opposition winning by 10 goals!!

6th March 2010 Harrogate 3 0-5 Halifax

Can't really remember much about this game apart from the fact we were pretty rubbish.

20th February 2010 Harrogate 3 4-2 Northallerton 1

Jenna is back on match report writing duty...

In the meantime why don't you enjoy this week's chemistry clip inspired by how well we played and the coldness of the weather last night? Once again don't do this at home! Unless your job is to weld railway lines together which is what they use the thermite reaction for!

6th February 2010 Harrogate 3 4-0 Wakefield 5

On a foggy day Harrogate 3s put in arguably their best performance of the season. Some of the Wakefield players were lost on the way to the game and so had to start as soon as they arrived. Harrogate soon put the Wakefield defence under pressure and won a short corner thanks to a Wakefield foot in the D. A straight strike from Anne Maguire resulted in the first goal of the game.

One goal quickly became two when a cross from a cross from the right evaded the Wakefield defenders for Emily Dunne to collect, beat a defender and score. The Harrogate speed of play slowed down a little which allowed Wakefield to have a few chances from short corners but good saves from Hannah Cooper kept them out. The third goal came from another short corner with Claire Turner putting home the rebound from a straight strike.

In the 2nd half Wakefield created more chances as Harrogate pushed forward to try and score more goals and Harrogate were lucky not to concede a goal. There were some great passing moves on both sides of the pitch for Harrogate but we lacked the killer touch. Finally though in a move which started in our left back area and saw the play switched to the right handside saw Vicky Darcy slot home from an Ali Metcalfe pass.

The 3rd XI Quiz team came in 2nd place. Sadly there weren't enough questions on Chemistry for my liking! We did though spot the places theme even if we couldn't remember who the First Team played this season! A big thanks to quiz master Dave Wood on a very enjoyable evening even if there were far too many George Clooney questions!

This week's clip is inspired by the recent winter weather and certainly looks much more fun than when I get do to do this experiment!

23rd January 2010 Airedale 1 3-0 Harrogate 3

The less said about this game the better! It started with traffic problems and ended with a woeful performance!

12th December 2009 Harrogate 3 3-1 Harrogate 4

This year the final installment of the 3s v 4s took place at the first attempt much to the relief of all concerned! The first half was a very even contest with both teams having good chances to take the lead. The best chance of the half fell to the 4th team when Cath Howarth was left unmarked and had just the keeper to beat who made a good save.

The half term Mulled Wine (thanks to Mole) clearly spiced up the 3rd team and we took the lead at the start of the second half thanks to a goal from top scorer Claire Turner who followed up on goal following a shot from Emily Dunne. The second goal came when a penalty stroke was awarded following a foul on Claire Turner. The 4th team keeper Julie Halford almost saved Natalie Clayton's flick but she didn't quite get enough of a touch to stop it going in.

The 4th team continued to press forward with Cath Howarth and Lizzie Partridge combining well to create chances for them. A straight strike at a short corner from departing Kate Surman made it 3-0. The 4th team scored when good work along the backline allowed Cath Howarth a simple finish. Man of the match was keeper Katie Holdershaw.

Sadly we have to say goodbye to Kate Surman who is heading back to her native south next week. She has been a fantastic addition to the 3rd team this season and we wish her all the best with her new job. Also congratulations to Kate Merrick on the birth of her first child.

This week's Chemistry Clip is again inspired by the festive season fingers crossed you don't have any problems on 25th!

5th December 2009 Wakefield Wanderers 1 2-3 Harrogate 3

Harrogate's match against Wakefield W was an end-to-end game, both giving a lot of pressure and having their chances. Wakefield thought they had scored early on in the match from a short corner but the straight shot was disallowed due to hitting the net; much to the relief of Harrogate, who took their chance at a short corner with a shot from Anne to be deflected by Claire into the net much to the annoyance of Wakefield who thought it ought to be disallowed.

A second goal nearly came thanks to a quick self pass by Nat which left her one on one with their keeper who made a good save. The opposition centre forward broke through our defence and had a one-on-one with the keeper, which resulted in a penalty flick being awarded and the scores on the doors were even by half time.

Hayley who had gone from the "energy of a buffalo" last week to a spider on acid this week; crossed the ball from the right and was finished by Claire. Harrogate continue to show great hockey. But it just was not enough, and Wakefield soon hit back with another drive down the centre to equalise again with a shot from the top of the D.

Determined to get those well needed points, Al, Vicky and Blayney attacked up the right, literally running rings around their defence. The ball was fed in and finished by Haley with another shot hitting the net.

Within the last few minutes of the match, Wakefield were given a Short corner for a foot outside the D and a chance to steal Harrogate's points away from us. Their shots came very close to the goal line, but we hung in there and the final score was 2-3 to the blues. MOM had to go to Emily, who showed skill and strong support on attack and defence. Proof that the 3's have a combination of experience and development of the youth in their side

This week's chemistry (ish) clip is inspired by the start of the festive season. Please don't try this at home! And just for for Haley!

28th November 2009 Harrogate 3 1-3 York University 1

Despite York Uni being below us in the league, this was going to be a tough match and the first half did seem evenly set. The play was end to end with neither side managing to break through the goal line, unfortunately York Uni scored first with a scrappy goal. York struggled to cope with the slippy pitch which was starting to freeze and a number of their players took nasty tumbles. At half time the score was still 0-1.

Harrogate drew confidence from the team talk and started the second half with an equaliser from a straight shot from a short corner. Anne's straight strike hit the goal line defender's foot before rolling across the line.

York had many chances from that point, with short corners, testament to our defence who kept them at bay; especially the shot that hit the cross bar and was cleared by Anne. That said, it was only a matter of time before the ball was put in the net from another short. The forwards and midfielders were not without their challenges. Ali having to hold onto her pants and Natalie showing some great marking and fitness that earned her MOM.

Harrogate kept up the the high pace match with only 12 men, but a late counter attack left the final score at 1-3.

Harrogate showed a great mix of skill, spice, energy and cheesiness, just like the Americano Pizza eaten on the team night out, afterwards. Although the loss, the 3rd's showed that Hockey can be taken seriously and be fun a the same time.

This week's Chemistry Clip is especially for our match report author Jenna. I just can't believe she didn't wear her prize! That has to be a fine!

21st November 2009 Halifax 1 3-3 Harrogate 3

Harrogate started the game poorly and within 5 minutes Halifax had taken the lead after a breakaway from one of their fast forwards gave them an easy goal. After that initial shock Harrogate started to get more of the possession and attack the Halifax goal. Some good hassling by Haley Bellerby saw her steal the ball from the Halifax defenders and calmly slot the ball past the keeper whilst their defenders stood around waiting for the whistle to go.

Halifax continued to press forward as Harrogate struggled to find their passing game. They won a number of short corners whilst were kept out until finally they scored from a straight strike. Their third goal came from a mistake by Harrogate who gave the ball away from a free hit and they were punished when a Halifax player drove the ball into the circle and scored with a lifted shot.

Spurred on by cheers from the Harrogate Men's 1st XI who were also in Halifax Harrogate pushed up more and started to dominant possession and put the Halifax defence under pressure. There were a couple of close calls before a cross from the right resulted in the ball being slotted home by Vicky Darcy.

Halifax continued to break but were kept at bay by some firm defending from Harrogate. Man of the match Haley Bellerby put Halifax under pressure every time she got the ball with her pace and skill which they struggled to keep up with. Harrogate almost equalised when the ball feel to a player in front of an empty goal but the ball hit a foot and the chance was lost. The equaliser again came from a scrap in the circle before Lynn Bowes slotted home much to the annoyance of Halifax.

Halifax when down to 10 players when one of the their defenders went over badly on their ankle and had to be carried off the pitch. Harrogate had a couple more chances to win the game but had gone more defensive to protect the draw rather than risk losing the game 4-3. This was the first time that Harrogate had come back from conceding the first goal to get any points. Haley Bellerby was man of the match after a fantastic performance which showed real energy and determination.

This week's chemistry clip comes from a suggestion by the man of the match Haley. Sadly I couldn't find anything to link with the nouvelle cuisine from teas! I imagine these people were as wet as we were when we left the field!

14th November 2009 Harrogate 3 0-2 Selby 1

Our first game at Rossett this season saw us face top of the table Selby. The weather wasn't the best with wind and rain making it tough at times but it was a very exciting game and a shame that more didn't see it.

Selby started the better team with their long (and hard) ball style hockey giving them a couple of good chances to score but they didn't manage to do so. However Harrogate soon got their passing game going and started to trouble the Selby defence. Following a good attack by Harrogate Selby quickly cleared their lines and hit a long ball to their centre forward who hit a reverse stick shot past keeper Hannah Cooper.

The first half was very even despite the scoreline but the second half was a different story. Harrogate had the lion's share of possession but were thwarted by some fantastic saves by the Selby keeper (who we voted their man of the match). We won a number of short corners which almost resulted in a goal but to no avail. The best chance of the game went to Haley Bellerby whose shot a goal was saved by a fantastic diving effort when it looked to all the world that it would go in.

Despite all the short sharp passing and much more mobile players we were weren't able to score that elusive goal as their defence kept us at bay. In the final minute having pushed up to try and score an equaliser we were caught at the back and Selby scored their second of the game.

It was disappointing to lose but we played very good hockey and on another day would have won. Man of the match wasn't Blayney this week but was shared by Haley Bellerby and Natalie Clayton.

This week's chemistry clip is inspired by the horrible weather we have at the moment fortunately it's been more grim down south so far! Enjoy the flaming tornado!

7th November 2009 Northallerton 1 4-1 Harrogate 3

10:30 away games are never a favourite of the 3rd team. We all value our beauty sleep! It was made worse this week by having to wait until 10:10am to get into the changing rooms which gave some players the chance to go to Tesco's and find novel ways of accruing fines!

We started the game quietly but within 10 minutes we had started to settle and get our game going. There were chances at both ends. Our best two chances came from a straight strike at a short corner which was saved off the line and a defense splitting past from Natalie Clayton which put Llzzie Partridge through on goal. Northallerton had a number of shots which just missed the post. At half time the score was 0-0.

Immediately after half term Harrogate took the lead after a good move down the righthandside led to a cross which Claire Turner clinically put away. The old adage that a team is at it's weakest when they have just scored was proved right with a brilliant breakaway goal by Northallerton. One goal rapidly became two when risky crossfield passes were intercepted by the opposition.

At 2-1 Harrogate pushed hard to get an equaliser and this gave more chances for Northallerton to break and score a 3rd goal. In the final ten minutes we won several short corners but just weren't able to find the back of the net. A disappointing trip north but at least the teas were top drawer! Man of the match was again Blayney who will be celebrating her birthday tomorrow.

I'm sure you'll all seen plenty of good chemistry in action this week but just in case your haven't here is some more! If you do want to learn more then try this but don't try any of this at home!!!

31st October 2009  Harrogate 3 3-0 Richmond 1

Harrogate were slow to start this Halloween Special, but were determind to have a magic game and for the result to not be a ghoulish one.

Keeping 50% of the possession the first 20 minutes seemed to be on an equal level. Harrogate finally got into gear with the ball coming from the right into the middle which was then fed to the baseline from Jenna to Haley, who finished the confident attack off by beating the Keeper.

...and from there Harrogate were running on high octane petrol... after a quick pit stop at half time, the team accelerated their play with some excellent recycling and short passing. On gaining a short corner Anne and Ali worked a right slip that finished with a cheeky ball through the keepers legs, from Anne.

Harrogate's defence were put under pressure to maintan their lead, defending a short corner but saw off all oncoming attacks. Blayney then took the ball from right defence, and assisted Ali with a run up the length of the pitch, finishing with a goal from Ali and the score at 3-0.

Pumpkin of the match went to a very energetic Blayney with 2nd placed Haley winning the chocolate orange. Just in case you haven't had enough of pumpkins this weekend here is some Pumpkin Chemistry

17th October  Harrogate 3 0-1 Dewsbury Kirklees 1

All sides have their bogey teams and we are no exception. After all who would have predicted defeats for both Chelsea and Liverpool today? Once again our home game produced a result in binary numbers. Fortunately this time we didn't lose 10-0!!!

Dewsbury started the better side by pushing up their players high and overloading us. Within 10 minutes they were 1-0 thanks to a strike from the top of the D. We just struggled to get our passing game going and kept giving the ball away.

In the 2nd half we started to play much better as a team and passed the ball much better. So much better than we'd been that Dewsbury even brought on their super-sub as they were that worried! We did get the ball in the net but it was disallowed for a foot in the circle. Unfortunately we just couldn't get the decisions from the referees (sorry, no umpires) and had a couple of clear short corners not given and the game was decided by that early goal.

Man of the match was Captain Sarah Blayney. We now have a week off for some R and R (get well soon Jenna) and hopefully we'll come back ready to get some more points on the board! This week's clip isn't stricly speaking Chemistry but it is inspired by the pre-match sweets!

10th October Wakefield 5 2-3 Harrogate 3

With Wakefield being in a similar position in the league to Harrogate, this game was set to go either way. It was an end to end match and certainly reflected an equal footing. Wakefield had their chances, managing to manufacture a couple of short corners which were seen off by Blayney and Mini Cooper. Harrogate launched a strong attack,  with Ali taking the ball up the right for Claire to finish in style, at a rather tight angle. This gave us the lead at half time.

Following on from our first goal, Anne made it 2-0 with a straight strike from our first short corner. But the pressure was by no means off, Wakefield responded with 2 consecutive goals which made the scores level at 2-2. With only a quarter of the match to go and neither team satisfied with a draw; the hockey really began. Wakefield launched their third attack; Mini Cooper stepped off her line for the one-on-one but was beaten by a 'v' drag and a strike that, just before  crossing the line, was spectacularly saved by Jenna (making up for missing an amazing pass from Blayney earlier in the game). Leaving Wakefield with a long corner to show for their efforts and keeping the score level.

Claire and Natalie rounded the game off  and ruined Wakefield's dreams of beating Harrogate, with another neat counter attack. When the final whistle blew, a relieved Harrogate left the pitch with the score 3-2. Special mention to Dawn's energy (now dubbed the Duracell Rabbit) and the man of the match Natalie.

Thanks for Jenna for this week's match report.  This week's chemistry clip is inspired by Wakefield's colours (well almost!). As ever do not try this at home!!!

3rd October Harrogate 3 0-5 Doncaster 3

The weather today wasn't the nicest with a howling wind that meant that play had to be stopped on at least three occasions to put the goal back on the line. Doncaster started much the better of the teams and forced the early pace. Unfortunately in an early Harrogate attack Blayney was hit in the mouth by a stick and had to leave the match to get medical attention. A big thanks to Heather Swarbrick and the first team doctors for their triaging skills and to Dave Redman for taking Blayney to A & E for treatment. Get well soon Blayney.

Doncaster scored their first goal from a short corner and then followed it up quickly after with another goal from a set piece. A straight strike from their ex-national league player. We did have a few chances but their keeper saved them easily.

in the 2nd half we did try to come back at Doncaster and started to play some better hockey but sadly we conceded a 3rd goal when an aerial shot looped over keeper Hannah Cooper after it held up in the wind when it appeared to be going over. Cath Jackson made a fantastic save off the line to stop another goal but they did manage to score two more to leave us on the wrong end of 5-0 scoreline.

Man of the match was Dr Cath Jackson and our next game will be our first proper away game (Harrogate 4 away doesn't count!) of the season in Wakefield.

This week's chemistry clip is inspired by the wind (Natalie's suggestion). So here is the whoosh bottle. DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME!!!!

26th September Harrogate 4 1-5 Harrogate 3

It was only the second league match into the Season and Harrogate 3rd team faced their toughest opponents in their league; Harrogate 4th Team.

This was set to be a nerve racking match but Anne Maguire had some pre-match words of encouragement for her team- “If you put a Jelly Baby into potassium chlorate, it acts as an oxidising agent and makes it scream”...

...And so with everyone's minds totally focused on the grudge match of 2009, push back commenced with both teams looking strong. The 4’s had an early break which resulted in a one-on-one with Smithy, but the defence saw this off with a counterattack up the right wing and, taking the 4’s by surprise, this was finished top of the D by Kate; to put us 1-0 up in the first 10 minutes.

After a couple of Short Corners; Anne, Kate and Ali created the opportunity for Claire to take the 3’s 2-0 up with a corner routine that the 1st team would envy. The third goal came shortly after by man of the match, Claire, who drove the ball from the 25m mark to the baseline of the D and shot from a very tight angle; to finish the first half 3-0.

In the second half the 4’s didn’t go without their chances, managing to put a cheeky one away, but were denied a second; having a dubious penalty flick saved by Smithy.

Harrogate Ladies 3rd team hit back; Ali took advantage of the midfield creating space and movement off the ball, to climax a confident attack up the right. The final goal came from Kate in the form of another slick Short Corner, to take the team to a final score of 5-1.Overall it was a top banana of a match.

Thanks to Jenna for this week's match report. Now just in case you've never seen a screaming jelly baby.... But don't try this at home!

 19th September Harrogate 3 5-0 Airedale 1

It's never easy being the last game on but the good thing is that at least it wasn't cold and dark. We last played Airedale two seasons ago when they were relegated only to gain promotion last season.

We were keen to get off to a good start but found ourselves defending in the early part of the game and with our first real attack Laura McCarthy slotted home from a pass from the right. The 2nd goal quickly followed when Claire Turner slotted home debutant Kate's Surman's cross from the right. Claire Turner then got her 2nd to put us up 3-0 within the first quarter of the game.

In the 2nd half we weren't able to put together quite the same level of passing that had put us up 3-0 quickly but we continued to create chances. The final two goals came from short corners with Kate Surman scoring from a left slip and Claire Turner seeing the ball over the line in another to get her hat-trick.

Overall it was a very good performance for the 3rd team and an excellent start of the season. Man of the match was Kate Surman. Next week we are away to Harrogate 4.

12th September  - Horsforth (A) 5-3W 10:30 (Friendly)

On Friday morning our original friendly had to be called off due to a lack of players for the opposition. At very short notice we managed to sort out another fixture against Horsforth who very kindly provided us with a goalkeeper. A number of players from last season have moved up to the 2nd team or left to go to university so the 3rd team welcomed a number of new players for their first game of the season  .

We didn't get off to the best start when we conceded an early short corner and allowed them to score an easy goal. However we soon equalised and went in front courtesy of a defection off a defender's stick. There were plenty of chances for us to score but we kept finding the keeper or just missed the post!

In the second half we quickly scored a 4th goal from a short corner but then gave away two easy goals by defending a little too high as we tried to score more goals. We worked hard to keep possession in and around the circle and make life difficult for the opposition. In the end we weren't quite sure whether it was 5 goals or 6 we scored!

All the players had good games but Natalie Clayton had an excellent game up front and scored two goals. Emily Dunne playing her first game for the 3rd team marked her debut by some fantastic passing and great awareness of where her teammates were. Overall an excellent performance but much tougher tests lie away when the league starts next week. Goal scorers: Natalie Clayton x 2, Anne Maguire, Claire Turner and Haley Bellerby.
